Dental Emergencies

If you need urgent periodontal care, call our office and explain your situation in detail to our receptionist; we will determine whether a same-day appointment is necessary. The earlier in the day that you’re able to call our office, the more likely we’ll be able to schedule an appointment for that day.

There are two reasons why a dental implant might feel loose. First, the restoration (the crown, bridge, or denture) attached to the dental implant may have come loose. This can easily be fixed with a quick visit to your dentist’s office. The second reason is if the dental implant itself is loose. This is rare, but when it happens, it’s a dental emergency that requires urgent care in order to save your implant.

When only the restoration attached to the implant is loose, it can be tightened and your dental implant isn’t usually compromised. When the dental implant itself is loose due to infection, dental trauma, or implant failure, it may need to be removed, depending on the circumstances. If your dental implant cannot be saved, we will remove it and allow the soft tissue and bone to heal before placing another implant.

Dental implants have a high rate of success, but if you’re concerned that your dental implant has failed, signs to look out for include severe pain, gum recession around the implant, difficulty eating, inflammation in the gums and soft tissues, and movement or shifting of the implant. Gum disease requires timely treatment, but it’s not typically considered a dental emergency. That said, several of the symptoms of gum disease do require urgent dental care. Periodontitis can cause your teeth to shift in your mouth, become loose, or fall out; it can lead to severe dental infections which need to be treated promptly in order to prevent infection from spreading to other parts of the body.
